Introduction

"A few months ago, I sat at the kitchen table with my daughter. The Doorstroomtoets kept getting closer. She looked at her practice book and asked: 'Mom, do I really have to?'

A child's journey from primary school to secondary school

That's when I realised I had the same questions as so many other parents. What exactly is the Doorstroomtoets? How much does it matter? How much should a child practise? And how do you help without adding pressure?

That's why I wrote this guide — not as an education expert, but as a mother going through the same process as thousands of other parents."

Chapter 1 — What Is the Doorstroomtoets?

The Doorstroomtoets is a mandatory, nationwide test taken by every Group 8 pupil in Dutch primary education, usually in February. It has existed since 2024, replacing the earlier end-of-primary tests (such as the Cito eindtoets), with one key change: the test is now taken earlier in the year — right after the preliminary school advice, rather than after it.

The test covers two areas: language (with reading comprehension as the core component) and mathematics. So it doesn't test everything a child learns at school — it focuses on a set of core skills important for success in secondary education.

Several providers are approved to administer a Doorstroomtoets, including the IEP Doorstroomtoets, the Doorstroomtoets from Leerling in Beeld, and Route 8. Schools choose which provider to use. The tests differ in format — some are adaptive (difficulty adjusts during the test), others follow a fixed set of questions — but they all serve the same statutory purpose and produce a comparable outcome. No provider is "better"; which one your child takes simply depends on the school's choice.

What the test does say: it provides an extra, objective data point alongside the picture the teacher has built up over several years. What it doesn't say: it says nothing about creativity, perseverance, social skills, motivation, or someone's worth as a person. A test measures a moment — a child is a development.

Practical tip: explain to your child that the test is a tool, not a report card on who they are.

Chapter 2 — The Group 8 Timeline

Practical tip for every stage: instead of "how did it go," ask "what did you enjoy or find easy today" — it opens a more positive conversation than a grade-focused one.

Chapter 3 — The Preliminary School Advice

The preliminary school advice is based on several years of observation: learning results, work attitude, independence, and social-emotional development. The Group 8 teacher prepares the advice, usually in consultation with the internal support coordinator and previous teachers.

Parents can always ask how the advice was reached — that's not an inappropriate question; schools are used to it. Feel free to ask: "which skills weighed most heavily?" or "what could my child do to strengthen this?"

Disagree with the advice? Talk to the school before doing anything else. A school advice is not final — the Doorstroomtoets still comes later and, if the score is higher, can lead to the advice being raised.

In the conversation with your child, staying calm matters most. Explain that this is advice about a suitable learning environment, not a statement about their future or intelligence.

Chapter 4 — How Do You Prepare Your Child Well?

Not with hours of practice, but with:

Example of a realistic weekly plan: Monday–Friday, 15 minutes of maths or language (alternating); a quarter-hour of free reading at least three days a week; one evening on the weekend playing something together that practises maths or language (a board game, a puzzle, or an app like In Galop) — and otherwise just playing outside, sport, or hobbies.

Chapter 5 — My Child Has Test Anxiety

Signals that may point to test-related stress: stomach aches or headaches right before a test, procrastination ("I'll do it later"), getting upset more easily during homework, crying at the thought of a test, and general uncertainty ("I can't do this anyway").

What parents can do: name what you see without judgment ("I notice you're nervous about the test — that's completely normal"). Talk about the test as something you tackle together, not something the child has to face alone. Avoid phrases that add pressure, like "this is very important for your future." Instead, focus on what is within their control: being well-rested, breathing calmly, tackling one question at a time. If the anxiety persists or grows, it's worth discussing with the teacher or school counsellor — test anxiety is a well-known and treatable issue, not an exception.

Chapter 6 — Frequently Asked Questions

"Does my child need to practise every day?" No. Regularity matters more than quantity. Three to five short sessions a week is plenty.

"How much influence does the Doorstroomtoets have?" The test can only adjust the school advice upward, never downward. The teacher's preliminary advice is always maintained at minimum.

"What if the score is higher than the school advice?" The school is generally required to reconsider the advice and, if appropriate, raise it.

"What if the score is lower?" Nothing changes — the original school advice simply stands.

"Should I hire a tutoring service?" Not as a default. Tutoring can be valuable for a specific gap or extra confidence, but it isn't a requirement for most children. Ask yourself whether it helps your child grow or mainly adds pressure.

"Is a practice app enough?" For most children, a combination works best: short, regular practice (for example through a playful app), combined with plenty of reading and a relaxed home atmosphere. No single tool replaces calm and confidence.

Chapter 7 — The Most Important Lesson I've Learned as a Mother

When I started In Galop, I thought I was building a learning app. Now I think I'm actually trying to build something else. I want to help children gain confidence. Because a child who believes "I can learn this" doesn't just take a test more calmly — that child also walks into secondary school with more self-belief. And maybe that's the most beautiful preparation we can give our children.

Introductie

Hoofdstuk 3 – Het voorlopige schooladvies

Hoofdstuk 6 – Veelgestelde vragen

"Moet mijn kind elke dag oefenen?" Nee.
